Because last Thursday I came back from RBSO concert and also on Saturday I just came back from Prince Mahidol Hall for first time in half year. Since I haven't been able to write a review for these concerts in time. By next week I will definitely release review these concert for sure. But in the meantime, I would like to bring the old review that I reviewed earlier from the concert of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra that I went to at the end of last year. which was the first time I went to in almost a year before the orchestra took long hiatus again for very long time. Both in terms of live performances and audience allowance until they came back again just last month. So I took some old notes that had not been released before and re-arrangement add amend some for this article. My written style may not be the same as what I written now, so I would like to inform you on this occasion before continue on.
TPO - Reunited! From 18/12/21 English Review
After a long hiatus, the concert has been postponed until it seems to be cancelled. The last time I went to Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra performed which also was the last time they organized it too in titled "Exotic Journeys" since at the end of March. It's been 9 months until now. YES! 9 MONTHS!!! I don't know how the orchestra will turn out then, but they finally made a comeback in "Reunited!" The new concert of the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra, the schedule of their performances even now still unpredictable due to the difficulties to invite any conductors and soloists coming to perform here.
To sum it up, it's both successful and equally disappointing return. What they success is that it has returned to performance again. This brought back almost all the musicians still present in the orchestra, although not all of them may still be impressed by that. But what was more disappointing was that the expectations they perform were the almost opposite of what I had expected. Maybe it's something that shouldn't be surprise because just coming after COVID, Probably.
For the works performed today, of course, this is the first concert in almost a year by taking some of famous works, although some works may not be very popular. The first half featured the Czech Suite by Antonín DVOŘÁK and the Concerto for Violin and Viola in E minor by Max BRUCH, which required the orchestra and section leader Omiros Yavroumis and Aibek Ashirmatov as Greek violin and Kazakhstan viola dualist respectively.
But after listening to the orchestra for awhile I found was a major problem that was because of a long hiatus causing many musicians quit the orchestra, especially those related to strings sections As I remember many musicians in this orchestra. Normally in this orchestra, the pros is that the strings sections are very good. You can sense the sweet playing. This caused the orchestra's unity to change quite a lot. If I compared to a frigate it was ones a frigate that has a strong structure. But for long time there are no maintenance as decay happens and frigate fail to set sail. In order to make orchestra to perform properly, causing the management in need to find many temporary musicians to fill the gap. Because of that . The orchestra's balance in performance was greatly lost. And because of this problem the orchestra's in today's performance is not as good as it should be. And when I saw the musicians disappearing this much, the quality of playing was noticeably lost, especially when concertmaster became soloist, causing the orchestra to be somewhat in slump than before. However the two soloists played really well as the leader of the orchestra.
In the second half comes with, Franz LISZT's Les Préludes and culminating with Pines of Rome, Ottorino RESPIGHI's important work. But when I think of Rome's pines, even though I've been to Italy before, I don't think much of the pines in Rome. Instead I think of the Humpback whale able to fly at the North Pole in Fantasia 2000 (and the second movement was cut off in the movie). This Concertmaster and the section leader are back in the orchestra again. As he is the most important person to bring the orchestra back to the way it was supposed to. However that was still scrappy sound, especially in the last work. The cons is quite evident in the lack of sound blending between the woodwind, the brass and strings sections making sound harsh quite a lot, which the quality opposite to the number of viewers today that have quite a lot as well. Finally, although overall the results may be acceptable, but I can only hope that the performance will be better in the next year. But I won't be here for a while as I don't know if there will be another concert or not. If so, will still be interesting? I hope that day will come soon enough.
This review cannot be rated a score because the quality is too bad to judge on anything.
